    ACHEMA LECTURE: CFD

    By Allgemein

THE LOCAL ANALYSIS OF VELOCITY GRADIENTS IN STIRRED TANK REACTORS USING COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS

As part of the ACHEMA PRAXISforums, Efraim Riess-Gonzalez will present his lecture on ” The Local Analysis of Velocity Gradients in Stirred Tank Reactors Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations” on Wednesday, 24.8.2022, at 11:10 am, H12.0 – Expert Forum.

The numerical simulation of fluids, better known as CFD (computational fluid dynamics), is nowadays a proven technology that has reached the level of accuracy and robustness that is required in order to be used as a standard tool for the analysis and design of stirred tank reactors, over the last years. Typical unit operation for which CFD can be used are, among many others: homogenization, suspension of solid particles, dispersion of liquid/liquid and liquid/gas systems, heat transfers, etc. On the top of that, the ability to numerically analyze a reactor at each location over the entire fluid volume opens up entire new possibilities.

In chemical or biological stirred tank reactors containing shear-sensitive organism or compounds, the only method regarding the shear-forces to design the mixing equipment was to calculate the averaged velocity gradient (also known as G value [1/s]). This is a global measure for the total dissipated energy into the reactor volume. With the help of CFD simulation shear forces and velocity gradients can be locally quantified and analyzed. The statistical evaluation of volumetric data can help to better understand the reactor behavior in order to optimize processes and also offers a new tool when designing novel mixer geometries that are able to smoothly introduce mechanical energy into the liquid media with lower high peak velocity gradients.

The ACHEMA PRAXISforums are held in the immediate vicinity of the respective exhibition group and focus on industrial applications, new products and services in chemical engineering, biotechnology and the process industry.

    ACHEMA LECTURE: TRIPOD AGITATORS

ACHEMA LECTURE: TRIPOD AGITATORS FOR MOBILE TANKS IN EX-ZONES – REQUIREMENTS AND PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS

As part of the ACHEMA PRAXISforums, Stefan Heuter will present his lecture on “Tripod agitators for mobile tanks in EX-zones – requirements and practical solutions” on Thursday, 25.8.2022, at 12:00 pm, H12.0 – Expert Forum.

In the world of industrial production tripod agitators stand for flexibility and operational safety at an affordable price. Due to their stand-alone structure not only is installation onto a container unnecessary, but additionally a whole variety of container sizes can be used. In the chemical and pharmaceutical industries with their large range of products this is often an essential requirement. And there are additional requirements when stirring explosive media.

Liquids that below atmospheric conditions are explosive (zone 0), with a less conductivity, may only be agitated under special conditions. Inerting is required by adding inert gases to displace atmospheric oxygen from the tank. This is hardly a problem for permanently installed tanks. Yet, if mobile tanks are to be used, up until now there has really never been a practical solution.

To solve this problem, Geppert Rührtechnik is relying on the proven tripod agitators, with which even the most hazardous of substances can be agitated in mobile tanks. The design of them takes into account the tank size as well as the hazard potential of the liquids. Barrels with 40 liters up to 1,000 liters stainless steel IBCs are possible. The controller features the required performance levels and allows easy operation. The fluid-mechanical, controlled inert gas flow ensures that only a minimum of inert gas is consumed. As such, the explosion protection around the floor stand mixers, typically zone 1, can be strongly limited.

The tripod agitators from Geppert Rührtechnik feature a wide range of application capabilities due to their flexible modular system – from the simplest application up to complex production plants in which dosing, process data recording and control can be integrated. Since 2003, Geppert Rührtechnik has been a certified manufacturer of explosion protected agitators.

Geppert Rührtechnik shows a series of interesting examples of real-world applications for different kinds of process industries.

The ACHEMA PRAXISforums are held in the immediate vicinity of the respective exhibition group and focus on industrial applications, new products and services in chemical engineering, biotechnology and the process industry.

MANUFACTURER GEPPERT RÜHRTECHNIK IS CELEBRATING ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

    By Allgemein

    Erzhausen, Germany, June 2021

This year, Geppert Rührtechnik GmbH in Erzhausen in southern Hessen, Germany, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. On this occasion, we want to take a brief moment to look back at half a century of mixing technology achievements and their developers. Managing Director Markus Fuchs explains the secret of the company’s success, and the three major milestones that mark its history.

In 1971, when engineer Horst Geppert established the company in the small town of Dreieichenhain, not too far from where it is located today, he definitely had no idea that it would grow to become a solid, medium-sized company within five decades.

Consistently new and improved developments of agitators for any kind of application led to a significant product portfolio and, combined with expertise and specialized consulting, appealed to a large group of customers from large-scale industry and medium-sized companies. A full range of customer types from all branches of the processing industries, such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, pulp and paper or food as well as in water and wastewater treatment.

Thanks to 50 years of experience in mixing technology and expertise in process engineering, the company today occupies a market position that allows it to offer tailored solutions, even for the most challenging task, like no other competitor.

Together with INVENT prepared for growth

The current management team made up of Stefan Heuter and Markus Fuchs has designated three events after the move to Erzhausen in 1993 as milestones in the company’s history. The milestones include the transformation from a manufacturer of agitators to a specialist for potentially explosive atmospheres and certified in 2003 in accordance with ATEX RL 2014/34/EU. Other milestones included the construction of a state-of-the-art company building in 2011, which houses expanded production and testing capabilities and, more recently, investments in high-performance machines for series production.

In response to the question about the secret of success, Markus Fuchs says: “We are a proven partner for our customers both for small to medium batch quantities, but also for individual products ranging from tripods with agitators to large agitators or in the ATEX version (i.e. those that feature explosion protection).”

Geppert Rührtechnik experienced a boost in terms of fluid mechanics expertise when it merged with INVENT Umwelt- und Verfahrenstechnik AG from Erlangen in 2016. It develops, produces and distributes innovative components and reliable plants and systems designed to clean and treat wastewater energy efficiently. Since then, many processes have been updated, digitalized and the course has been set towards more standardized processes and growth.

“The right product at the right time in the right quality!”

Even last year, when we were all affected by COVID-19, the company managed to stabilize lead times – despite material bottlenecks, price increases on the material market and other delays caused by the pandemic.

“I am pleased and relieved that even under pandemic conditions we were able to adjust our processes within the company to allow the customer to benefit,” Markus Fuchs sums up the current situation. “The right product at the right time in the right quality! That’s what sets Geppert Rührtechnik apart.”

The CEO is looking toward the future with optimism and has plans to continue to expand the leadership role in the market the company has achieved, while continuing to play an increasingly active role in the international market. The envisaged expansion will require qualified staff, and this is probably the greatest challenge, because skilled workers are in short supply. “Our employees are our most valuable asset. Without the dedicated team at the Erzhausen site, we wouldn’t be able to get anything done,” Markus Fuchs knows and is soon planning an employee celebration to mark the anniversary, which will of course adhere to COVID-19 requirements.

    EX-PROTECTION IN MOBILE TANKS
